What is an ELICOS Course?
Australia is recognised as having a very high quality education system. This includes schools, universities and the vocational education system. Australia is therefore a very popular location for international students and the Australian economy greatly benefits from the contribution made by international students. In 2015, over half a million students came to Australia. Because of its importance to Australia, the Government has put in place laws and safeguards for students coming here to study that ensure a high standards and quality of education.
What is ELICOS?
International students may come to Australia with plans for a full study program which includes English language as the stepping stone to other courses, or they may come to Australia only to study English. English courses for overseas students holding student visas are called ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) courses.
So if you are applying for a student visa to study in Australia and you want to study English only or English as the first step in your studies, then you must choose an ELICOS course.
Colleges that want to offer ELICOS courses to international students must go through an accreditation process and comply with the National Code as well as other regulations. , which helps to ensure that students will be taught by qualified English teachers, programs will be accredited and class sized kept small. If an English provider is not CRICOS approved, then they cannot offer English language courses to overseas students. Elite English Institute is also accredited by National ELT (English Language Teaching) Accreditation Scheme (NEAS)
What is CRICOS?
When an English college has shown that it meets the required standards, the college is given a special number called a CRICOS Provider Code. ‘CRICOS’ means Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students. All schools, colleges and universities that provide courses to international student visa holders must have a CRICOS Provider Code. Every course offered to international students must also have a CRICOS Course Code. For example, Elite English Institute’s CRICOS Provider Code is 03247G. The CRICOS Course Code for its General English course is 072830K.
Every college that provide courses for overseas students, including Elite English Institute, must always show its CRICOS Provider Code and its CRICOS Course Codes for each course it offers in any publications, brochures, booklets or websites it produces. This is important to you as an international student because it means that you can go to the CRICOS government website http://cricos.education.gov.au/default.aspx and check that both the college and the college’s course(s) are registered on CRICOS.
Just go to the website and enter either the CRICOS Provider Code or the CRICOS Course Code to check that your provider/ college or course is registered. If you are applying for a student visa to study in Australia and cannot find a provider or a course(s) on the CRICOS website, then you should not enrol in that college or course.
